- Sometime during the 4th quarter of 1995 there was a substantial
- design change in the V34 Sportster. The "new" models utilize a 92 Mhz
- Clock Frequency and current firmware for THOSE models is 10-18-95 for
- the externals and 10-13-95 for the internals. The major differences
- in the products are that the "NEW" Sportsters no longer have a separate
- 80186 CPU chip, cpu functions now being incorporated into the DSP. Also
- the DAA (phone line interface) has been changed to use a much larger
- transformer than prior units. (better perhaps?)
-
- To the best of my knowledge, the 08/29/95 firmware is the most recent
- chip available for the -prior- design.
-
- The 10-18-95 (and 10-13-95) firmware chips can only be used in the
- newer design Sportsters.
-
- How to tell the difference: Look at the 8th digit of the product
- serial number. If this digit is either a 1 or a 2 then you have the
- new design. ie; 00083900 and 00084000 are the prior version.
- A zero here ^ and here ^ is the indicator. You will
- likely encounter both 01 and 02 series units and I'm unsure what those
- differences are. The 02 is definitely the new model and I suspect the
- 01 is as well.
-
- Another way to identify "old" from "new" Sportsters is to look at the
- ati7 screen CLOCK FREQUENCY. The previous production Sportsters used
- a 20.16 Mhz clock. The newest models use a 92 Mhz clock. Firmware
- between the two models is radically different and not interchangeable.
-
- Just when you thought it was safe to go back into the water....
